Benefits
Benefits of Attending a Driver Improvement Course:
If you receive a ticket for a non-criminal moving or non-moving violation and
you decide to attend a basic driver improvement course, the violation will be
entered on your driving record as an "adjudication withheld." As a
result:
-
No points will be assessed against your driver's license.
-
Safe driver status is maintained if applicable.
-
The civil penalty (fine) will be reduced by 18 percent.
-
Your insurance rates cannot go up and your policy cannot be cancelled because
of this violation. However, your insurance rates may go up if you were
involved in a crash where you were at fault, if you exceeded the speed limit by
more than 15 mph, if you receive a second ticket within 18 months or a third
violation in 36 months.
-
Some insurance companies provide discounts to their customers that choose to
take a basic driver improvement course. Note: this discount is solely at
the discretion of your insurance company.
Mandatory Reasons for Attending a Basic Driver Improvement Course
-
You were the driver in a crash and are found at fault.
-
Someone was transported to the hospital as a result of the crash.
-
You had two crashes in a two-year period resulting in property damage exceeding
$500.
Deciding to Attend Traffic School
Within 30 calendar days from the date your traffic ticket was issued and prior
to taking the course, you must:
-
Inform the Clerk of the Court in the county where you received the citation
that you want to go to traffic school.
-
Pay an assessment fee to the Clerk of the Court in the county where you
received the citation.
-
Note: you may go to the Clerk's office in person or if the officer provided you
with an envelope at the time of your violation, you may use it to indicate your
intention to attend a driver improvement course. Read the affidavit
attached to the envelope carefully, complete the affidavit and mail it to the
Clerk's office in the county where you received your citation. Be sure to
mail the affidavit early enough for it to be received within the mandatory 30
calendar days.
-
You will have between 60 to 90 days from the date of the ticket to complete an
approved course. (60 days for Leon County)
Information You Need to Know
-
You can choose to attend a driver improvement course only once in any 12-month
period and no more than five times in your lifetime.
-
Procedures and fees are not the same in all Florida counties. Each county
has its own procedures for this process. If you have questions, contact
the traffic division in the Clerk of the Court's office in the county where you
received the citation.
-
If you choose to pay the civil penalty or are adjudicated guilty by a judge,
your driving record will be assessed points.
-
12 points in 12 months, your license will be suspended for 30 days;
-
18 points within 18 months results in a 90-day suspension;
-
24 points with a 36 months results in a one-year suspension.
